In Germany, driving schools are among the businesses that earn quite well. This is also shown by the statistics on driving licences issued. According to Statista, the German online portal for statistics, the number of driving licences issued was around 41.7 million. That is more than 1.5 million than in the previous year.
That is actually quite a modest number. The measures against the Corona virus have also had a strong impact on this industry, so that driving schools have had to reckon with fewer customers for about two years. However, a comparison with 2006 shows us how popular they are for Germans. The number of card driving licences issued has almost doubled in this period.
Moreover, the number of driving licences does not reflect the total number of clients. Many people re-register because they cannot pass either the theoretical or practical tests. The first driving licence was issued to coachmen in Germany and perhaps in many other countries.
Driving schools have been around for 127 years
We know that the first riding and driving school was founded in Elmshorn in 1894. However, the first driving school as we know it today was founded in 1904 by Rudolf Kempf and had the title "Auto-Lenkerschule". This driving school appealed to men aged 17 and over who could produce an official certificate of morality. Car manufacturers recognised the potential of this driving school and Kempf enjoyed their full support.
However, it took 17 years before there was any talk of a driving instructor. It was not until 1969, however, that future drivers could benefit from a trained driving instructor. Furthermore, the number of driving schools registered in Germany is always decreasing.
While we had 13,262 flying and driving schools in 2009, we had 10,900 flying and driving schools in 2018. This is mainly due to driving instructors retiring at an older age and a lack of new blood. However, the interest is still high.
