Focus on best-selling cars in Europe: Stable car market in October
Thanks to the data published by JATO, we now know more about best-selling cars in Europe. New car sales in Europe remained stable in October 2024, reaching 1,040,390 units. This represents a decrease of only 0.1 per cent compared to the previous year. Despite this stability, the market reveals weaknesses, especially in comparison to the significantly higher registration figures in September. These were almost 79,000 units higher than the October figures.
Nevertheless, a look at the cumulative figures from January to October shows a positive trend, with growth of 1.1 per cent and a total of 10,796,414 vehicles sold.
Best-selling cars: Dacia Sandero at the top
The list of the best-selling cars in October is particularly exciting. The Dacia Sandero was able to reclaim the top position after being overtaken by the competition in September. With stable registration figures and a broad customer base, Sandero remains a favourite among the best-selling cars.
It is followed by the Peugeot 208, which boasts an impressive increase of 40 per cent compared to the previous year, and the VW Tiguan, whose model change brought it an increase of 72 per cent.
The list of best-selling cars is rounded off by the Renault Clio and the Toyota Yaris Cross. These continue to be in high demand. The Volkswagen Golf is a surprise with 16,455 units and growth of 34 per cent, slowly regaining its former dominance.
Strong growth for electric cars
Meanwhile, electric cars have significantly strengthened their position on the market. With an increase of 6.7 per cent compared to the previous year, they show that the demand for environmentally friendly mobility continues to rise. However, the Tesla Model Y, once a frontrunner among the best-selling cars, fell out of the top 25 and was beaten by the Skoda Enyaq in the electric car category.
Brand rankings: Volkswagen remains at the top
Despite some challenges, Volkswagen remains the best-selling brand in Europe, with an increase of 18 per cent and 115,027 units sold in October. Toyota and Skoda follow in second and third place. Peugeot and Opel, which belong to Stellantis, were also able to hold their own. However, they still lag well behind the frontrunners.
The data from October 2024 clearly shows that the European car market is in a phase of upheaval. The best-selling cars continue to rely on proven successful models, while the advance of electric cars is having a lasting impact on the picture. Winners such as the Dacia Sandero and the Peugeot 208 demonstrate the importance of innovation and market adaptation in a challenging environment.
